L’AGENCE FEMININE DANS LES ESPACES TRANSNATIONAUX A TRAVERS DOUCEURS DU BERCAIL D’AMINATA SOW FALL
Abstract
Abstract
The feminisation of migration has reshaped contemporary understandings of mobility by highlighting women’s growing participation in transnational movements as independent social actors. However, despite increasing scholarship on African migration narratives, limited attention has been paid to female agency within transnational spaces. This study examined the representation of female agency in Aminata Sow Fall’s Douceurs du Bercail, using Transnational Feminism as its theoretical framework, with its emphasis on migration, mobility, identity, and gendered cross-border experiences. A qualitative approach based on close textual reading and thematic analysis was employed to explore female characters’ experiences and their negotiation of transnational realities. Findings revealed a multidimensional form of female agency expressed through bodily integrity, identity reconstruction, economic autonomy, and community engagement. In the face of oppression, Asta transformed vulnerability into resistance and action, achieving a progressive reclamation of self beyond patriarchal and migratory constraints. The novel therefore presents female agency in transnational spaces as a dynamic process of empowerment, negotiation, and social transformation, conceptualised as Negotiated Transnational Agency. The study concluded that Douceurs du Bercail represents migration not only as exclusion and displacement, but also as a transformative space where women negotiate belonging, reconstruct identity, and assert autonomy. It recommended greater scholarly focus on agency-centred readings of African migration narratives and recognition of migrant women as active agents of social change.
