Abstract

Every language has a standard variety quite different from the individual forms. For a language like Igbo, while some scholars argue against its standardization others believe that it must be planned (Mbah, 2003). Thispaper is designedto examine the influence of English Language on Igbo Languageby showing practical areas of this influence. The data were drawn from classroom interactions and observations. The results show that English has negative influences on Igbo in the areas of phonology, morphology and syntax. The study recommends that children be taught Igbo alphabet early enough; there should be creation awareness and orientation amongst the youth; parents should interact more with their children in Igbo; Igbo language teachers should have the requisite skill, knowledge, qualification and interest.
